ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a globally recognized unique identifier for books and independent publications. Since January 1, 2007, the 13-digit ISBN format has been universally adopted, replacing the older 10-digit format. Each formally published book has a unique ISBN, acting as its "ID number."
The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is an international identifier for books or standalone publications (excluding periodicals). Publishers use ISBNs to clearly distinguish all non-journal publications. Each ISBN corresponds to one and only one publication. A new ISBN is assigned for each new edition or significant revision. Minor revisions to an existing edition typically do not require a new ISBN. Separate ISBNs are required for different formats (e.g., hardcover vs. paperback) of the same book.
Generally, an ISBN contains either 13 digits (post-2007) or 10 digits (pre-2007), composed of 4 or 5 parts:
1. GS1 prefix (for 13-digit ISBN only): usually 978 or 979
2. Country or language code
3. Publisher code
4. Title-specific number
5. Check digit
13-digit ISBNs are typically divided into 5 parts (10-digit into 4), separated by hyphens (-) or spaces for readability. The number of digits in each segment varies. Hyphens are ignored during system processing but help users identify the country and publisher.
The earlier Standard Book Number (SBN) lacked country/language codes. With ISBN, country codes were added: 0 for the U.S., 1 for English-speaking countries, 2 for French, 3 for German, 4 for Japan, 5 for Russian, 7 for Chinese-speaking regions, etc. Country codes can be up to 5 digits long (e.g., Bhutan: 99936), which reduces available digits for publisher/title assignment.
National ISBN agencies assign digit ranges based on publisher size. Larger publishers receive shorter publisher codes (allowing more titles). ISBNs are usually printed on the copyright page and above the barcode, though not legally required.
Publishers apply for ISBN blocks based on projected output. If a block is exhausted, they can request additional ranges. Thus, ISBN digit allocation is optimized per country and publisher.
